2025
Ben has three things to do today.
A show is opening
later, but first he has a family meeting, and before that there’s a funeral.
A single day can encompass
the past, present and future; friends, family and strangers; the ridiculous,
the moving and the inspirational.
Like life.
A
Three Thing Day was inspired by one of those busy days we all have
every now and then, where we've got to be different places, meet
different people and do different things. I completed the script in late
2024 and did an informal reading at the Hen and Chickens, with the first
public reading at The Bookseller Crow in Crystal Palace in late January
2025. And the preparations for the Edinburgh fringe began.
Another reading followed at the Laugharne Weekend in March and I learned the piece for the first
Work In Progress stage performance at Colchester Arts Centre in
April, which went really well. There were further WiPs at Machynlleth
and Exeter Comedy
Festivals, the Idler Festival and The First Light Festival in Lowestoft.
A short run of shows at the Hen and Chickens warmed the show up, and I
was set to go.
Robert Wells got the
show up and running and Charlie Miller took over the controls for the
run in the Below space at the Pleasance Courtyard. After a predictably
slow start with small audiences, the show got going in the second week
of the Fringe. Reviews were really good and the audience response was
amazing. I spoke to so many people after the show when I was selling the
book, and it was wonderful to hear that virtually everyone had
different favourite lines from the piece - one comic said every line
could go on a T-shirt (different T-shirts, I think). I started selling
out after the mid-run day off and the momentum was good. Only four
reviewers made it along to the show but they all gave it Four Star
reviews. It was also amazing to have other performers respond to the
piece so positively.
The team at the venue and all the Pleasance crew and staff were amazing and I had a great month. I saw around 40 other shows (and lots more in advance as WiPs) and recommended them regularly on social media, sending them Accoladles, the premier spoon-based award in the arts. and it was nice to have a successful run where the show got better and I felt very much at home in the world of the piece.
Image-wise, Andy Lane took some brilliant photos at the Barbican on a winter Saturday morning and Stephany Ungless created a fantastic triptych design for the poster and flyer. Simon Oakes composed a set of stunning music pieces for the show which created a brilliant mood, and the lighting effects that Robert and Charlie created elevated the piece wonderfully.
There are future dates for the show below and the text is on sale (Currently UK Customers only) at my Webshop.
