THE 4th SUMMER WATERMELON

25th August 2006

On the Friday evening of the Bank Holiday weekend, the Club held its fourth tournament of the year - the Summer Watermelon.

There had been rain for much of the week and the course was moist but the evening was mild and sunny. A 6pm start had been arranged but many players took that as advisory. We threw off at about 6.30 and made good progress around the course desipte the fact that nearly a dozen were all throwing in the one group - discs had to be marked!

Newcomers to the game included Dave G2 (a second Dave G), Georgie, Kass, Piers and Duncan. And Duncan's dog Chester. Another rookie, Martina, joined us at Birch to Horse Chestnut. Leila and Tom arrived just before the end and although they threw for the last few holes, their scores were not recorded. Sorry.

A short cut was decided upon towards the end of the round and so the scoring is not official for club records, but the late start meant that we were losing the light. And seeing as we were all in one group the round took well over an hour.

However, in the gloaming the scores were totted up, and Raj won the Men's Watermelon and Cat the Ladies'. Congratulations to both of them.

We all headed on to the Edinboro Castle for a well earned drink and banter. One sad note of the day was observing the devastating effect of leaf miner moths on the leaves of the Horse Chestnuts around the course. A reminder of nature's whims.

Thank you for a great tournament and see you all in the Autumn!

NOTES

Ten discs were in play for much of the round. Two groups would have been preferable, but the late arrival of many players meant the course was not marked up before play.

Raj and Georgie arrived at the 2nd hole and were given par for hole 1. Marlies and Saj arrived at the 3rd and were given pars for holes 1 and 2.

After the 8th hole it was decided to skip the Church Mound hole and throw towards the Birch on Hill for time reasons. This cut maybe ten minutes off the round but makes the scoring ineligible for Club records.

*Duncan and Piers both scored holes in one at the short 11th - now the 10th - and were rewarded with apricots.
