Big growth in Internet use in Britain
More and more Britons are logging on to the Internet. Another
million people went online last month alone and nearly one in three now
has access to the worldwide web at home. However, as Tara Ogden reports,
Britain is still lagging behind the United States.
The average UK user now spends five hours logged on to the Net each
month - while in America the average is nine hours.
And while in the States men and women use the Internet in equal numbers,
in Britain sixty-two per cent are men, and only thirty-eight per cent
women.
The findings are based on a survey of British Internet usage in March.
John Nives, from the company AC Neilson which carried out the reasearch,
says Britain has got some catching up to do.

We think the
UK is about eighteen months behind the US. In the US
now we see a fifty-fifty split male to female. We expect that to occur in
the UK as well. There's a good opportunity for local UK properties to
attract females to the Internet by developing content targetted to them.
The survey also found that American-based sites are the most popular
in Britain. MSN dot com - which is the Microsoft Network site - takes
the top spot. In second place, is the search engine, Yahoo. The favourite
Internet site for Britons under 20 is the homepage for the World Wrestling
Federation. While among managers and executive staff - it's the website
for the tax department. Tara Ogden in London.
